About iLevelUP
iLevelUP is a free, AI-powered, game-based learning experience being developed by Believe in Me to help young people explore education and career possibilities and build self-confidence. The product is in limited beta. The learner is the main character, and iLevelUP is the guide.
EdTech integration engineer role overview
The official role is EdTech Interoperability & District Integration Engineer. iLevelUP seeks a remote volunteer EdTech integration engineer to build secure, maintainable connections with school and program systems. You will turn a verified integration need into a clear technical plan, working implementation, and supportable handoff.
At the limited-beta stage, the priority is a small number of well-scoped integration patterns. You will help the team understand which connections are necessary and validate them before making district-facing promises.
What you will own
You own technical discovery, mapping, implementation, testing, and operating documentation for approved school integrations. The implementation lead coordinates educator rollout, the data-pipeline owner manages content-source ingestion, and privacy and security owners review permissions and student-data handling.
EdTech integration engineer responsibilities
- Document target identity, SIS, LMS, and program workflows with the implementation lead; clarify required fields, actors, permissions, and the intended learner experience.
- Design standards-based patterns where appropriate, including OneRoster 1.2 for approved data exchange, LTI 1.3/Advantage for LMS connections, and OIDC or SAML for single sign-on.
- Prototype the smallest useful connection using sandbox or synthetic data, with explicit criteria for when a custom API or scheduled file exchange is preferable.
- Define stable identifiers, tenant boundaries, role mapping, source-to-target fields, data contracts, and rules for provisioning and deprovisioning.
- Implement validation, idempotent synchronization, pagination, rate-limit handling, scoped credentials, retries, reconciliation, and safe recovery from partial failure.
- Coordinate consent, sharing, retention, deletion, and vendor requirements with the privacy advisor. Protect logs and test fixtures from unnecessary student information.
- Test identity failures, duplicate accounts, role changes, withdrawn learners, term transitions, and mismatched records before enabling a connection.
- Create district-facing technical requirements, integration runbooks, monitoring and rollback procedures, and a clear support handoff. Document standards conformance separately from any formal certification.
Early deliverables
- First 30 days: produce an integration-needs assessment, prioritized standards map, and proposed data contract.
- By 60 days: demonstrate one approved integration pattern with synthetic data and document its security and reconciliation checks.
- By 90 days: complete a readiness review and operating runbook; enable a real connection only after partner, privacy, security, and leadership approvals are in place.
EdTech integration engineer required qualifications
- Experience building API, identity, data-exchange, LMS, SIS, or comparable enterprise integrations.
- Proficiency with a suitable language such as Python, JavaScript, or TypeScript, plus HTTP APIs, authentication, structured files, and automated testing.
- Working familiarity with at least one school interoperability or identity standard and the ability to learn the others from primary documentation.
- Ability to design stable mappings, reliable synchronization, and diagnosable failure handling.
- Good judgment about least privilege, tenant isolation, credentials, and student-data minimization.
EdTech integration engineer helpful experience
- Hands-on experience with OneRoster, LTI Advantage, OIDC, SAML, district technical onboarding, or education-vendor security reviews.
- Experience creating integration test fixtures, data reconciliation reports, runbooks, and supportable onboarding documentation.
How we work
Work with engineering, data, security, privacy, implementation, and product contributors. Validate requirements with approved partners and seek review before enabling production access or expanding a data feed.
