Fully remote | Unpaid volunteer | United States
About iLevelUP
iLevelUP is a free, AI-powered, game-based learning experience being developed by Believe in Me to help young people explore education and career possibilities and build self-confidence. The product is in limited beta. The learner is the main character, and iLevelUP is the guide.
Student privacy lead role overview
The official role is Student Privacy & Youth Safety Lead/Advisor. iLevelUP seeks a remote volunteer student privacy lead to turn privacy and youth safety principles into practical product requirements.
At the limited-beta stage, you will help the team understand what data is necessary, how it moves, who can access it, what families and schools need to know, and how concerns are escalated. The work should support responsible development and honest readiness decisions.
What you will own
You own the privacy and youth-safety framework, risk register, and policy recommendations. Engineers implement and test technical controls; the AI evaluation lead tests model behavior; organizational leadership and qualified counsel make decisions requiring executive or legal authority.
Student privacy lead responsibilities
- Create a data inventory and flow map covering learner identity, age, progress, AI interactions, analytics, support, vendors, and approved school integrations.
- Document purpose, access, sharing, retention, deletion, and permitted use for each data category; prioritize minimization and privacy-by-default settings.
- Assess which COPPA, FERPA, PPRA, Washington student-privacy, and other requirements apply to each use case, and route legal interpretation to qualified counsel.
- Review age-screening, parental or school authorization, notices, consent, access and correction, account deletion, and research workflows for clarity and appropriate safeguards.
- Review model providers, analytics services, identity tools, and other vendors for training use, retention, onward sharing, security expectations, deletion, and incident notification.
- Define appropriate boundaries for AI characters and any proposed adult-to-youth communication, community, or user-generated-content features before they are introduced.
- Create practical reporting, triage, escalation, confidentiality, and evidence-handling procedures. Clarify who acts on urgent concerns and when specialized legal, safeguarding, or clinical expertise is needed.
- Maintain readiness criteria, staff and volunteer training materials, decision records, and a prioritized remediation plan; verify that documented safeguards are reflected in actual workflows.
Early deliverables
- First 30 days: complete an initial data inventory and applicability assessment and identify the most consequential privacy and safeguarding gaps.
- By 60 days: deliver consent and retention requirements, vendor-review findings, and a clear incident-escalation playbook.
- By 90 days: review implemented safeguards and provide a readiness recommendation with supporting evidence, remaining gaps, and named decision owners.
Student privacy lead required qualifications
- Professional experience in student privacy, educational technology, child safety, safeguarding, compliance, information governance, trust and safety, or a closely related field.
- Working knowledge of US student and child privacy requirements and the judgment to recognize when qualified legal review is necessary.
- Experience with data mapping, privacy impact assessments, retention, consent, vendor risk, or incident-response planning.
- Ability to translate policy and risk into clear product requirements, operating procedures, and acceptance criteria.
- Strong discretion, careful documentation, and communication suited to engineers, educators, families, volunteers, and leadership.
Student privacy lead helpful experience
- Experience with AI products, school data agreements, online youth services, safeguarding operations, or privacy-control testing.
- Relevant privacy certifications, legal training, or equivalent applied experience. Attorney licensure is not required for the advisory role.
How we work
Work with product, engineering, AI evaluation, security, research, and program contributors. This role advises and supports implementation; it does not confer legal authority or assign volunteers independent crisis or investigative responsibilities.
Why volunteer with iLevelUP
- Contribute to a nonprofit education product at a stage when your decisions can shape the learner experience.
- Own a meaningful body of work and collaborate across education, design, engineering, and student support.
- Develop work samples and share approved contributions in your portfolio while respecting project and learner confidentiality.
Time commitment and location
Fully remote and unpaid. Contribute at least 10 hours per week for 12 months, with priorities and collaboration times agreed during onboarding.
