Security Engineer role overview
As an iLevelUP Security Engineer, you will contribute practical expertise to a nonprofit education product in limited beta. Build security into iLevelUP’s web and mobile applications. Work with developers to identify weaknesses, implement protections, and verify that changes address the intended risk.
You will work with the relevant team to agree on priorities, review progress, and document decisions. Because the product is still developing, clear handoffs and useful feedback matter.
What you will own
Your contribution centers on the responsibilities below. First, understand the current work and the needs of your collaborators. Next, agree on a manageable scope with the team lead. Then, share progress and raise blockers early. Finally, document the decisions that your teammates need for the next step.
Security Engineer responsibilities
- Conduct regular security assessments and vulnerability testing of both the mobile and web application to identify potential risks.
- Collaborate with the app development team to integrate security measures and best practices into the development lifecycle.
- Develop and implement security protocols and measures to protect against unauthorized access, data breaches, and other cyber threats.
- Monitor security systems and logs for suspicious activity, investigating and responding to security incidents promptly.
- Stay updated on the latest security trends, threats, and technologies, recommending enhancements to the application's security posture.
- Educate the project team and volunteers on security awareness and best practices.
Early deliverables
- First, review the current cybersecurity and it operations work and identify useful next steps with your team lead.
- Next, agree on an initial deliverable, its review criteria, and the people who need to contribute.
- Finally, complete a reviewable piece of work and document what the next contributor needs to know.
Security Engineer required qualifications
- Ability to assess web or mobile application security and document actionable findings.
- Ability to test for vulnerabilities, assess their impact, and verify fixes with developers.
- Understanding of authentication, authorization, secure development, and data protection.
- Ability to review security logs and help investigate incidents through the team’s response process.
- Clear communication for technical findings and practical security recommendations.
- Ability to collaborate remotely and contribute two to three hours per week.
Security Engineer helpful experience
- Experience integrating security reviews into an application development lifecycle.
- Experience writing security documentation or helping colleagues apply secure development practices.
