About iLevelUP
iLevelUP is a free, AI-powered, game-based learning experience being developed by Believe in Me to help young people explore education and career possibilities and build self-confidence. The product is in limited beta. The learner is the main character, and iLevelUP is the guide.
Data Scientist role overview
As an iLevelUP Data Scientist, you will contribute practical expertise to a nonprofit education product in limited beta. Turn data into evidence the iLevelUP team can use. Explore patterns, build appropriate models, and evaluate product changes without overstating what the results show.
You will work with the relevant team to agree on priorities, review progress, and document decisions. Because the product is still developing, clear handoffs and useful feedback matter.
What you will own
Your contribution centers on the responsibilities below. First, understand the current work and the needs of your collaborators. Next, agree on a manageable scope with the team lead. Then, share progress and raise blockers early. Finally, document the decisions that your teammates need for the next step.
Data Scientist responsibilities
- Collect, clean, and analyze data from various sources to uncover actionable insights that drive decision-making and strategy development for app improvements and user engagement.
- Develop and implement statistical models and machine learning algorithms to predict user behaviors, app engagement, and success outcomes.
- Design and execute experiments and analytical approaches to measure the effectiveness of app features, content, and interventions on user success and engagement.
- Create compelling visualizations to communicate findings and insights to the team and stakeholders in an understandable and actionable manner.
- Work closely with the app development, content, and marketing teams to integrate data insights into app design, content strategies, and outreach efforts.
- Prepare and present regular reports on findings, progress, and recommendations for action to the leadership team and project stakeholders.
Early deliverables
- First, review the current data analysis and insights work and identify useful next steps with your team lead.
- Next, agree on an initial deliverable, its review criteria, and the people who need to contribute.
- Finally, complete a reviewable piece of work and document what the next contributor needs to know.
Data Scientist required qualifications
- Proven experience in data science, statistics, computer science, or a related field.
- Proficiency in data analysis and statistical software (e.g., Python, R, SQL) and familiarity with machine learning frameworks and libraries.
- Strong skills in data visualization tools and techniques to effectively communicate insights.
- Ability to tackle complex problems with a strategic and analytical approach, turning data into actionable insights.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data into clear and compelling narratives for non-technical audiences.
- Willingness to volunteer 2-3 hours per week and engage with a team of passionate volunteers remotely.
Data Scientist helpful experience
- Formal education in a relevant discipline is preferred but not mandatory.
How we work
Work with Data Management Team through approved project tools. In practice, share concise updates, ask for the context you need, and keep decisions in the agreed workspace. For example, explain what you completed, what needs review, and what is blocking the next step. In addition, protect learner and project information when preparing examples or discussing your work.
Why volunteer with iLevelUP
- Contribute to a nonprofit education product at a stage when your decisions can shape the learner experience.
- Own a meaningful body of work and collaborate across education, design, engineering, and student support.
- Develop work samples and share approved contributions in your portfolio while respecting project and learner confidentiality.
